So, let’s cut to the chase - the reason that slashed the price of the by 33% at the September 5 Apple Event was because and company felt that was the best way to bring the device to the mainstream phone buyer. Everyone I know who owns an iPhone is someone who is an early adopter of consumer electronics. People who buy Apple products the moment they are available, people who refresh their RSS readers a few times an hour (or more), and people who scour sites like Gear Live for news multiple times a day. The only person I knew who owned an iPhone who didn’t fit the mold was my wife, Monica. I figured I would have her review the iPhone from her perspective - that being someone who couldn’t care less about technology, gadgets, the Internet, or anything that involves something that has to be charged or plugged in to a wall. This, dear friends, is a review of the iPhone from someone who is completely satisfied with the free crappy phone you get when you sign up for any standard cell phone plan.

Bluetooth SIG just announced the new spec for Bluetooth, that being Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. We had Mike Foley head on over to Gear Live headquarters to give us a first look at what is improved in the new spec, and to show off the ultra-cool near field communication technology that is now a part of Bluetooth. Casio gives us a look at their rugged GzOne cell phone. It’s Casio’s first cell phone launched, and it’s water and shock-resistant, as well as being scratch proof and dust proof. Think of it as the phone version of an extreme sports competitor. It has so much built-in protection, that it’s going to be a challenge to break the phone. In fact, they even prove how well the phone performs by ducking it in a fishtank. Available now from Verizon starting at $299.

Greg from American Power Conversion gives us a look at their universal laptop battery that lasts for nine hours. Yeah. Nine hours. These are fairly cool, and sit below your laptop. It takes about 16 hours to charge, so an overnighter is smart with these - but seriously, nine hours of extra power is fantastic. This battery runs about $199 USD. The company also has a battery for portable devices that provide about 55 hours of power for $69.99 USD.

CES 2007 Video: Ontela Sends Photos From Phone To PC

We met with Dan Shapiro from Ontela here at and learned more about their coming mobile photography technology. The average consumer takes more than 150 pictures with their cell phone each year, and does nothing with them - they sit on the phone, unprinted, unsent, and unappreciated. Ontela’s technology automatically transfers photos from your phone to your home computer using your phone’s internet connection.

The Ontela technology is brain dead simple: the trigger for the transfer is as simple as clicking the shutter button. Once you have taken your photo it’s sent to the computer, effectively giving you a computer hard drive sized memory card. You can also choose to have the Ontela service transfer the photos to Flickr, Kodak, or other services for you automatically.

The technology is being sold to carriers and is not available yet, but will be appearing in phones soon - stay tuned for more information on this fantastically simple way to get your photos off your phone, and in to your life.
